Another assault in Adelaide’s Hindley Street precinct

A man is in hospital after he was assaulted in a Hindley Street car park early this morning.

Police were called to the car park just after 3.30am after receiving reports of a disturbance and found an unconscious male with head injuries.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transferred to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The incident is one of several that have plagued Adelaide’s party precinct and traders are calling for an urgent upgrade to improve public safety in the area.

“There’s a lot of things that need to be done around Hindley Street,” Andrew Wallace from West End Traders Association told.

“There’s things around public realm improvement, the foot path is in very poor condition, we could with some more greening, some more softening, better lightening.”

But an increase in patrol numbers is not on the cards.

“What we don’t want is to have police absolutely flooding the street, you want it to appear a naturally safe place. So our preference is to make this street a naturally safe street that requires a whole-lot less policing.

“I think if you make the street a better place, and attract different sorts of business into the street, different people into the street I think we can see Hindley Street returning to the safe and diverse community that it was 30 years ago.”

The Association is also hoping the government’s changes to liquor licensing will help reduce alcohol-fueled violence along the strip.
