Foreign spectators have been banned from attending the Tokyo Olympics, which has been delayed by the corona virus. According to the French news agency AFP, the organizers of the Olympics announced this decision on Saturday, calling it disappointing but “inevitable”.
Following the decision, the Tokyo Olympics will be the first mega event in history to ban foreign spectators. The spread of the corona virus around the world, including in Japan, has hampered organizers’ efforts to make the event a success. Local officials, Japanese officials, Olympic and Paralympic officials said in a statement issued after the meeting that “the corona virus is still a major challenge” in Japan and the outside world.
“The decision was not an easy one,” said Seiko Hashimoto, head of the organizing committee for the Tokyo Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IOC) said in a statement that they “fully respect and support the decision, which was made for the safety of everyone participating in the Olympics and the Japanese people.” According to a recent poll in Japan, 75% of Japanese are opposed to the participation of foreign fans in the Tokyo Olympics. Only 18% of those polled supported allowing foreign fans to watch the competition.
According to a poll conducted in January this year, public support for the Olympics in Japan has declined, while another poll found that more than 80 percent said the Games should be canceled or postponed again.
